MHPC: Mental Health Primary Care
Mental Health Primary Care refers to the type of mental healthcare that patients receive from their General Practitioner.
The acronym MHPC can be used in the Summary of Care Records and medical notes to give insight into where the patient was seen regarding their mental health. In mental health, General Practitioners can refer patients to specialists and counsellors, monitor long-term conditions and medication plans, and are typically the first point of care and contact for people suffering from mental health-related issues in the UK.
Can GPs prescribe medical cannabis in the UK?
No, only accredited specialists who are listed on the Specialist Register of the General Medical Council can prescribe medical cannabis in the UK. However, GPs can still provide support and treatment for mental health conditions through therapy, medication management, and referrals to specialists.
Can specialists provide prescriptions for mental health issues in the UK?
Yes, but only through private cannabis clinics. The NHS is currently unwilling to offer medical cannabis prescriptions for any condition outside severe epilepsy, nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy, or multiple sclerosis.
