Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a chronic and often painful condition where the tissue that lines the uterus grows outside of it, usually on other organs in the pelvis, such as the fallopian tubes and ovaries. The symptoms are similar to those experienced during menstruation, such as heavy bleeding and cramping, but can also include pain during intercourse and bowel movements.

Endometriosis is a condition that affects roughly 10% of all females of reproductive age. It causes tissue to grow in the ovaries and fallopian tubes, which can lead to severe vaginal, period or pelvic pain, constipation, nausea, diarrhoea, and difficulties during pregnancy.

What causes endometriosis?

No one knows the exact causes that lead to a woman contracting endometriosis, but there are a few theories. One suggests that during menstruation, the tissue lining the uterus can flow back through the fallopian tubes and implant in other areas. There could also be genetic or hormonal factors at play, and there is research currently underway to better understand the condition.

Can medical cannabis help with endometriosis symptoms?

While medical cannabis cannot cure endometriosis, it has shown potential in managing its symptoms. Cannabinoids in the plant, such as THC and CBD, have anti-inflammatory properties that can provide relief from pain and inflammation associated with endometriosis. Taking a cannabis-based medicine may also help regulate hormones and reduce muscle spasms, which are common symptoms of the condition.

Is medical cannabis legal for treating endometriosis in the UK?

Yes, but not through the NHS. In November 2018, the UK government rescheduled cannabis-based products for medicinal use, making them legal to prescribe by specialist doctors. However, since endometriosis is not currently recognised as a qualifying condition for medical cannabis treatment on the NHS, patients will need to contact a private cannabis clinic, like Releaf.
